The European Commission has mobilised 30 million euros in humanitarian aids for the neediest ones in Lebanon. “I am extremely concerned by the constant escalation of tensions in the Middle East”, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated in a notice, as she called on “all parties” “to do their outmost to protect the lives of innocent civilians”. It is to them that the European aids are going to, to provide civilians with “much-needed assistance during this very difficult time”, went on the President, who added: “We continue to call for a ceasefire across the border with Lebanon and in Gaza, as well as for the release of all hostages”. Such aids will be used to provide urgent food assistance, shelter and healthcare. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated too to speed up the supply of material assistance in Beirut. A few days ago, on 29th September, the EU Commission had already released another 10 million euros in humanitarian assistance but, as the notice from Brussels explains, “the conflict has triggered unprecedented population displacement in Lebanon, with already thousands of casualties and injuries among civilians”. Since the start of 2024, the EU’s total humanitarian assistance to the Country has exceeded 104 million euros, in the attempt to mitigate a situation that was serious already, before the recent developments in the Middle East: 2 million Lebanese and Syrian refugees suffer from food insecurity, a number that is bound to increase even further.
